During his residency in Krems from September to November 2020, Corné Strootman examined the contrasts between the historical and picturesque district of Krems, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and another district that is a mixture of modern industry, trade and living - Krems-East. How did these two different landscapes develop in close proximity? How do they relate to one another? And can the qualities of the two landscapes be the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship? A short film and a brochure resulted from the research.

Corné Strootman explored the relationship between Krems-East and the Wachau World Heritage Region using film as a method. This resulted in the short film „Painting a picture: on the fringe of world heritage“. The film tells the story of three painters who lived and worked in the Wachau at the turn of the century. Their life stories are juxtaposed with a landscape portrait of the atmospheric qualities and peculiarities of Krems-East.
Cover detail: Creating a Framework
While the film was being made, Strootman developed numerous design proposals for Krems-East, some of which he presents in the brochure "Creating a framework. A spatial analysis and twelve design recommendations for Krems-East" for example the reintroduction of an alluvial forest in Krems-East. The brochure gives insight into the processes and spatial forms of the region and stimulates a discourse on spatial planning and architectural development.
