For the AIR program, five studio apartments designed by architect Franz Sam were built in the attic story of a former carpet factory along the Krems Art Mile, where the ORTE office is also located. These apartments have provided temporary living and working space for visiting foreign artists in the fields of fine art, literature, architecture, and music since the year 2000, creating international and interdisciplinary exchange between art and culture producers.
ORTE Lower Austrian Architecture Network is a partner of the AIR program, providing a studio apartment in Krems and a stipend to selected architects, spatial planners, landscape architects, designers, theoreticians, curators, and artists with a focus on architecture. The program is financed by the Lower Austrian government, and scholarship recipients are chosen once a year by a jury. Artists in Residence stay for five or eleven weeks. ORTE also provides a work presentation as part of the ORTE event program for some studio guests.
In the AIR archive it can be traced how differently the artists perceived and evaluated Lower Austria's architecture and cultural landscape with their "view from outside". The Walter Zschokke Library is also home to the smallest building culture gallery in Austria, which is equipped with a modular exhibition display and presents works of some Artists in Residence.
