OPEN CALL FOR APPLICATIONS. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Niederösterreich 2027
Who can apply?
In order to apply for an AIR scholarship, you must have completed your studies in a building culture field (architecture, urban development, urban planning, spatial planning, landscape planning, etc.). Austrian citizens and residents of Austria are excluded from the program. Scholarship recipients are required to reside in Krems for the scholarship duration.
What are we looking for?
ORTE is dedicated to contemporary architecture education and building culture issues in Lower Austria and is interested in practice-related projects. We are looking for concepts that focus on environmental and climate issues as well as the living environments and local interaction. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss your proposed topic before you apply.
How and when to apply?
A jury of experts selects the applicants to be accepted into the AIR building culture program.
The online application portal for the 2027 residency will be open between February 9th and May 7th, 2026.
Applications are accepted exclusively online via AIR – Artist in Residence Niederösterreich | Kunstmeile Krems. Using the link provided there, applicants are directed to an online application form where they can enter their personal details and upload the required documents (portfolio, CV, etc.).
Deadline for the application is May 7th, 2026, 23.59 h.
The application needs to include the following:
1. Portrait photograph (JPG format, max. 1 MB)
2. CV (PDF format, max. 1 MB)
3. Portfolio (PDF format, max. 15 pages, max. 7 MB)
4. Planned project (max. 4.000 characters)
5. Optional: links to media (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.)
Applications that are a.) incomplete; or b.) surpass the listed size limits will be rejected without review.
What do we offer?
Two residency periods are available:
January 18 to April 4, 2027, with a scholarship of EUR 3,900,
or
May 24 to June 27, 2027, with a scholarship of EUR 1,950.
Studio and living facilities are provided free of charge.
In addition, ORTE offers the selected artists the opportunity to network within the Austrian building culture scene and, where applicable, to present their work to a broad audience.
Furthermore ORTE offers an approximately 40 m² exhibition space in the Walter Zschokke Library in Krems. This "smallest building culture gallery in Austria" can offer space for the works of some artists or architects in residence and present their artistic and analytical view of building culture. Suitable exhibition displays are available for this exhibition space.
What is NOT provided?
Travel cost payments or refunds.
A translator: You must be able to communicate in German or English.
