UNDERNEATH: Krems beyond the visible

During her Artist-in-Residence residency in Krems from May to July 2026, architect and visual artist Jelena Pejković developed the project UNDERNEATH: Krems beyond the visible. The residency took place at the invitation of ORTE Architekturnetzwerk Niederösterreich and was carried out in close professional exchange with the organization. The newly created works are now presented in cooperation with Kulturverein STEIN*STEIN.

UNDERNEATH: Krems beyond the visible

In the age of algorithms and machine learning, what happens if you rely on your most valuable resource: your attention? What can be uncovered, for example, from rigorously paying attention to the seemingly conventional, traditional, earnest architecture?

In her exhibition UNDERNEATH: Krems beyond the visible, Jelena Pejković presents a selection of mixed-media works created during her residency in Krems. Working with graphite, ink, and collage on found paper, she explores the hidden layers of the urban landscape. Her works invite viewers to look beyond the visible surface of the city and uncover the historical, spatial, and cultural dimensions that lie beneath.

Jelena Pejković is an architect and visual artist based in Belgrade. She graduated from Harvard University and received her Master of Architecture degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to her return to Belgrade she worked for Renzo Piano Building Workshop on projects that include Whitney Museum of American Art and Harvard Art Museums. Jelena has researched and drawn urban and rural sites across the globe, from the Balkans to Bhutan. Her work has been exhibited in China, Iran, Italy, Finland, Montenegro, Norway, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand and the United States.

ORTE Architekturnetzwerk Niederösterreich, in cooperation with AIR Niederösterreich, hosts Artist-in-Residence programmes for architects in Krems.
